Leading by Example

A few days ago, my family went to have lunch in a famous restaurant in Palawan. “Ka Inato is a renowned restaurant where foreign guests swarm by, especially during lunch and dinner.

While enjoying our lunch, I noticed a young girl, around 5 years of age. She waits patiently around the cover with her eyes scouring the influx of patrons who would give alms. I felt bad. Here I am enjoying our lunch while someone is hungry, not knowing when she’ll be able to taste the sumptuous meal.

Because I wanted to show my daughter that caring is essential. I ordered another set of chicken meals to give to the poor girl. “I would like to give this to the young girl. She looks hungry and hasn’t had her lunch.” I uttered. Making sure that my daughter heard my intentions. My daughter looked at me and asked, “Is it for the little girl, Daddy?” I said, “Yes.” She smiled back with a sense of agreement.

As we were about to leave, the little girl approached me. I handed her the chicken meal. Smiled back at me with the gratitude that comes from the heart.

We lead by example. I would like my daughter to learn early on that giving is righteous. Helping is a way of living.
